Metro Recycling Awards Three Student Scholarships

Metro Recycling had the opportunity to award three local high school seniors with a Metro Recycling Scholarship. This is the second year that we have had the privilege of awarding three students in our community $1000 scholarships. We recognize that the communities that we operate in are a key factor in our success and we feel compelled to give back to the community to express our appreciation and it is our hope that we can lessen the financial burden placed on families.
The applications are sent out to all high schools that fall within the Blue Island, Griffith and Valparaiso city limits. The requirements to be awarded the Metro Recycling Scholarship were
  1. Level of need
  2. Scholastic achievement
  3. Involvement in community, school and work.
  4. Evaluation of responses
  5. Interested in pursuing an environmental major (preferred, but not required)
After reading an array of applications and much deliberation, the scholarship committee came to a final decision on a recipient for each city.

Mayra Suarez (Blue Island, IL), Lauren Hernandez (Griffith, IN), and Cheyenne Garpow (Valparaiso, IN) have all excelled in their classes and have been prominent members in their school and community activities. Each has given of their time and energy to make their high schools and community’s better places. As they continue with their education Metro Recycling wishes them the best.

Metro Recycling Receives Employer of the Year Award

On May 13th, Metro Recycling was honored to be awarded the Employer of the Year award from Opportunity Enterprises Job Source program.

Metro Recycling hired both Gregory and Michael to join the team back in 2013. Both men work out of our Griffith location and we have thoroughly enjoyed having them with us.

Dwayne Evenhouse, Operations manager for Metro, said “Greg and Mike are both great, hardworking men. They are a great addition to the team and we’re glad to have both of them on board with us.”

JobSource opens so many doors to careers for people with disabilities, finding employment that fits with individual vocational goals and aspirations. We’re excited we have the opportunity to be a part of this program and look forward to many more years of involvement.
